Why remote online notary prep matters (30 seconds)
RON is quick when you’re ready—and slow when you’re not. A few minutes of prep prevents failed ID checks, reschedules, and document re-do’s.
New to RON? Start with How It Works.
1) Confirm acceptance (before you book)
Ask the receiving party/recording office if they accept online notarization. If they need in-person or wet signatures, RON won’t fly.
2) Get the right document (as a PDF)
- Download the final version.
- Do not sign it yet.
- If multiple docs, label them clearly:
POA_main.pdf,ExhibitA.pdf, etc.
3) ID must match (name, and it’s current)
- Government photo ID (driver’s license or passport).
- Name must match the document. Middle initials matter.
- Have a second ID handy in case the platform requests it.
- Be ready for KBA (quick questions based on public records) and/or an ID scan.
4) Tech check (2 minutes)
- Best on laptop/desktop with Chrome or Edge; phones work but are fussier.
- Stable internet; sit near your router.
- Camera and mic on; no VPN or locked corporate device.
- Close noisy apps and browser tabs.
5) Remote online notary prep: room setup
- Quiet, well-lit room. You should be alone on camera.
- Lay the ID flat when asked; avoid glare.
- Have your payment method nearby.
6) Witnesses (if required)
- Some documents/states require witnesses.
- Confirm how many, who qualifies, and whether the platform supplies them.
- If you’re providing witnesses, they need their own device/cam and ID.
7) Signing time: what not to do
- Don’t sign beforehand.
- Don’t crop your ID or block the camera.
- Don’t use nicknames; sign as your name appears on the document.
- Don’t step off camera during the recording.
Remote Online Notary Prep Do/Don’t
Do: use a current government ID • check acceptance • test camera/mic • keep the room quiet
Don’t: pre-sign • use a VPN • rely on a cracked phone camera • invite background “helpers” on screen
